Naturopathic medicine is a distinct form of health care with an emphasis on prevention, treatment and optimal health guided by the use of therapeutic modalities which support the body's innate ability towards self-healing. In conjunction with the Foundations of Naturopathic Medicine, a therapeutic order is incorporated to utilize the least invasive treatments first, while understanding that there is a time and a place for more invasive treatments as well.
We recognize the value of our natural world in assisting the healing process. Not only do NDs utilize substances that originate in nature, but we also incorporate a healthy natural environment as foundational to human health.
Core to all medical practice is the desire to help the human form and condition. We approach care by utilizing the most natural, least invasive and least toxic therapies.
There is a time and place for symptom suppression, however most naturopathic patients will benefit from identifying the underlying causes of illness and removing obstacles to cure.
We elevate patient health literacy. That means that we are part of the team helping patients have a better understanding of what it takes to be and stay well. Through education and a trust-based relationship, patients better understand the steps they need to take to achieve and maintain health.
We understand the interconnectedness of our body, our environment and our lifestyle on total health. It is only through this whole-person-based approach that NDs seek to restore balance and health.
Naturopathic medicine affirms that it is better to prevent illness and suffering whenever possible. Through their comprehensive practice, NDs combine all six principles in order to identify potential areas of imbalance and teach patients how to get well and stay well.
A licensed naturopathic physician (ND) attends a four-year, accredited, graduate-level naturopathic medical school. In addition to the standard biomedical science curriculum received by an MD, naturopathic studies include clinical nutrition, physical medicine, homeopathic medicine, botanical medicine, psychology, and counseling.
Students also gain hands-on clinical experience that prepares them to serve as primary care general practice physicians. Individuals exploring how to become a licensed naturopathic doctor often begin by researching accredited programs—sometimes informally referred to as naturopathic doctor schools—that meet national standards for licensure.
A naturopathic physician takes rigorous professional board exams administered by the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Examination (NPLEX) so that they may be licensed by a state or jurisdiction as a primary care general practice physician.
Ohio is currently an "unlicensed" state in the US, meaning that currently anyone can say they are a Naturopathic physician. The Ohio government is currently reviewing a law that would regulate the practice in this state to ensure anyone claiming to be a Naturopathic physician met all of the above requirements and had passed the National Boards.
